Hilarious Hump Day – Happy Birthday Me and a New Year’s Prayer

Well, gang, the Old Silly turns sixty today. Yupperdoodles, it’s that landmark day where I hit-

The Big Six Oh!!

And I’m down with that. No, really – I’m cool with the old man image. Jeez, when I was a kid I thought anyone in their 60’s was ancient with one foot in the grave. My, my, my, how time changes our perspectives, hmm? I am reminded of a quote I heard from the great speaker and motivational coach, Norman Vincent Peale on his 92nd birthday. He had just been told, by a snotty nosed little Harvard brat, after a speech Norman had given, that the student “didn’t know if he ever wanted to live to be that old!”

Peale smiled and had a little chuckle, then in his vast wisdom and dry come-back style, patted the young upstart on the shoulder and said, “Well, young man, that’s because you’ve never been ninety one years old.”

So anyway, I had my checkup, and the Doc says I’m doing fine – see?

Okay so I’m carrying a few too many pounds. Lighten up, willya? What’s that? I’M the one who should “lighten up?” Oh – the weight, yeah. Will do, it’s on my “New” Year’s (whatever the heck a “new” year is – but that’s another muse and post) resolution list. Promise. Scout’s Honor, the Old Silly is dropping 25 pounds by swimsuit season here in Michigan.

So but anyhoo, gonna end this celebratory post with a New Year’s prayer fitting for someone my age:

God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway,
The good fortune to run into the ones that I do,
And the eyesight to tell the difference.

Thanks for blogging in, peeps, toodles and good things to you from The Old Silly, and blog back in tomorrow for an inspirational post to ring in the “New” Year with.

(would someone tell me just what a new year is?)

Happy Birthday Marvin and many more, less of the old( I’m older than you lol).
May I tell you this joke I heard at a concert I went to? It goes like this:

A man who was 92 went to his doctor for his yearly check up,
    The doc, said” Wow you’re
in excellent shape for your age”
The old man said well that’s just as well as I’m getting married next week…….to a lass of 16 yrs.
The doc exclaimed will you be having “Relations?” of course the 92 year old said.
Well take things easy replied the doctor.
The old man said well if she dies she dies.

    Have a wonderful birthday.

    Yvonne.

    Happy Birthday, Marvin!!!
And sixty is NOT old. You’re right – the more years that pass, the further away ‘old’ becomes. It’s all in our attitude and how we view the world and life.
I plan on acting silly and childish right until the very end!

    • theoldsilly / Dec 30 2009 9:05 am

Thanks, Diane – and you and me BOTH! 🙂

    Happy Birthday Marvin.

I remember being young and looking at my mother and aunts and thinking they were so old. Now, I think back and realize they were probably in their forties. Old? Ha! It’s all relative.

  26. Rayna / Dec 31 2009 2:56 am

    Happy Birthday, Marvin.

When I was young, I thought anyone in their late thirties was old. I am that age now, and I definitely do not feel middle aged, much less old.

Age is what you make of it, and you are a fantastic person, whether you are 20, 40, 60, 80 or 100.

Happy Birthday from across the Seven Seas.
