The Pledge of Allegiance – Under God
I think globally and consider the peoples from all countries as part of one family, all children of God. That being said, I am still an American and proud to be so, with a heart that hurts what with all the wrong turns our once great nation “under God” has taken over the past several decades.
A good old friend tipped me off to this excellent short piece by one of my favorite childhood entertainers, that marvelous, humble, witty and hilarious comedian, Red Skelton. Whether you are US citizen, or from our friends to the north in Canada, or from any other free and democratic country with its roots in adhering to God-like principles in its origin and bylaws, I know you can all appreciate this.
Amen to that, Red. You said it, brother.

I felt the message travel through every fiber of my being and all the way to my very core. The word “God” in the pledge is beautiful and powerful. I agree that it should be left in there. After all, Allah means God, Yahweh means God, right?

Kinda solemn….this early Friday morning.
Wow so touching. I’m too young to remember Red’s shows, but now I want to get some DVD’s of his old shows. That was powerful.
Now THAT is partiotism! And no, I’m not an elitist nationalist, either. But abandoning God -in ANY country – is stupid foolishness.
I remember Red. Great man, so self-efacing and a natural comedian and entertainer. I miss the days of non-potty mouthed, real, truly funny comedians like him. And this is a side of Red we didn’t often see, the simple, altruistic folksy philosopher. Thanks for sharing this, Marv.
This is one of my favorite clips of Red Skelton. He was a wonderful, funny, sweet man who knew how to be funny without being nasty or irreverent. The world lost a gem when he died. I loved the way he always signed off his show with “Good night and may God Bless.” Thanks for sharing this, Marvin.
I love Red Skelton, I have many, many videos. (VHS) hehe. I know, I know, I’m older than dirt! Funny how things he did years ago, still apply today! Great job Marvin.

I hadn’t seen the video but I have had and will again have, this mp3 in my collection. I used to watch his show and loved every episode. Yes, a wonderful person he was. Why comedians have to resort to sex and other dirty material is quite beyond me. I prefer clean humor.The good news is that his humor was taped for the world to enjoy for generation after generation.

Not a fan of the ‘under God’ in our pledge because there are plenty of people who don’t follow the Christian faith and I do believe government and religion needs to be kept separate. That being said, I still get tears in my eyes when I say the pledge or when I hear/sing Star Spangled Banner. I love this country and wish everyone in it, Christians/non-Christians/Atheists/??? would let each other live their lives and work together to make it a better place.

95% of the world’s population believes in a God – “Under God” needs to stay.

I too remember Old Red. Great man, and this is a fine commemorative of how he was not only a remarkable talent as a comedian, but had some great wisdom about him, too.
